Event description
Dowsers, artists, environmentalists, geographers, historians and scientists share discoveries about the waters around / beneath Hastings.

About this Event

The Sea Beneath: Discovery DayThe water is rising. What will Hastings do? The Sea Beneath is an ambitious environmental art, science and heritage project to explore the hidden water courses - and other invisible, unseen and forgotten features - beneath the streets of Hastings.

The project combines instinct, historic methods, science, expert analysis and creativity. We’ve worked with dowsers, old coastline maps, historians, myths and facts surrounding the America Ground and the potential threat from rising seas and climate change.

You can attend one or all of the sessions below as you choose on the day:

Session 1 (1hr): DowsingExplore unusual and long-forgotten features and water sources under the pavements of central Hastings through the work of dowsers. We talk with dowsers about their findings, see them mapped onto Hastings’ streets, and learn more about this fascinating way of seeing the past and present.

Session 2 (1hr): Shifting TidesLed by MSL researcher Julie Gidlow, this session will delve into the past to look at evidence and maps showing that waves once washed much further inland around and within Hastings. This is a story of storms and coastal destruction on a massive scale, and how Sussex and Kent have changed.

These stories might contain lessons for the present and future; archives could show where our current coastline is vulnerable.

Session 3 (1hr): Shaping the FutureJoin us to re-make and remodel Hastings and show how we can live sustainably after 2050, when sea levels might have risen by up to two metres. Invited artists, environment and community development specialists will talk about how they see the future coastline and explore how the town could face the future with new confidence and in safety from the rising seas. Speaker: Esther Rolinson - the artist who made 'Stream' on St Leonards seafront

We invite you – expert or amateur, student or scientist, to send us your visual ideas of how to make a better town for all of us.

Use two downloadable maps of the town as a guide for your ideas or make your own. Find the maps at mslprojects.co.ukYour maps and visuals of Hastings 2050 will be sent live on the MSL Projects website and promoted on our social media profiles.

Can you help stem the rising tide?
