Event description

Description

Among the white water enthusiasts in central asia there are three rivers which stand out being the hardest and most remote of the whole former USSR: The Bashkaus in the Altai mountains in Russia, the Saryjaz River in Kyrgyzstan and the Muksu River in Tadjikistan. Expedition leader Tomass Marnics (LAT) and film maker Olaf Obsommer (GER) together with a core team of international paddlers set the goal of pulling off this »Triple Crown« back in 2010 when they first paddled the »Book of Legends« stretch on the Bashkaus in Siberia. After they ticked the Saryjaz off their list in 2015 there was only one river left – the Muksu deep in the high mountains of the Pamirs. In the beginning of September a big crew (Tomass Marnics, Olaf Obsommer, Thilo Schmitt, Fabian Dörfler, Philip Baues, Erik Boomer, Egor Voskoboynikov, Alona Buslaeva and Mike Krutyansky) met in the tadjik capital Dushanbe to prepare for the descent. To even get to the put-in the kayakers had to climb over a 4555 m high mountain pass and walk a total of 35 kms with all their equipment for the ten day mission. Being very exhausted from the high altitude and some gastro-intestinal disease they we’re quite lucky to meet some nomads just over the pass who offered to carry the boats to the put-in with their donkeys. Once on the river the group used the Belandkyk river as a two day, low volume creek tributary to the Muksu where soon the intensity picked up. Thin air combined with vertical canyon walls, high (maybe too high?) water and a lot of almost blind must-runs made the crew go to the limits of their capacities – and beyond. The Muksu was without doubt a worthy final chapter of this multi year Triple Crown project. But beyond the extremely demanding white water it is the Tadjik people with their incredible hospitality and the countries breathtaking alpine beauty which will stick in the crew’s memories.

Olaf will introduce and show the film and answer audience questions afterwards.
