About this event
Event Overview:
Join West Midlands and Yorkshire & Humber AHSNs to learn about a new campaign called Multicultural (MC-STOMP) initiated by Dr Hassan Mahmood, Consultant Psychiatrist who currently works at Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (BCHC).
STOMP - stands for Stopping Overmedication of people with a Learning disability, Autism or both with psychotropic medicines. It is a national project supported by NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSE/I) involving many different organisations which are helping to stop the overuse of these medicines. STOMP is about helping people to stay well and have a good quality of life.
Multicultural (MC) STOMP - The STOMP messages articulated to us on the NHSE/I website appear simple when reading the text in English. However, in inner city Birmingham, the ethnic profile of some areas means that ethnic minorities are in the majority and many individuals in the community may not have English as their first language and have different cultural approaches to mental health. In Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, experience has shown that some people from ethnic minority backgrounds had:
- Difficulty reporting and recording challenging behaviour
- Engaged less with non-pharmacological strategies
- Wanted medication first-line for challenging behaviour
- Experienced Language barriers
This has led to a programme of work known as Multicultural STOMP. Some of the resources were developed with support from NHSE/I and appear on a new, locally developed STOMP website.
Join us on 10th February 2022 where we will share resources, experiences and inspire you to spread the campaign messages.
