Rice is a symbol of community and an integral aspect of East and Southeast Asian identities – something that our diverse cultures share in similar yet different ways. We’ll explore rice from an agricultural perspective, as a sign of resistance, as an everyday staple, and its different culinary applications in an informal panel discussion. We’ll then be treated to a live cooking demonstration by our chef, Yuen, who will cook fried rice, followed by a communal dining experience for all of us to enjoy the vital staple that is rice. We will also be enjoying some kakanin from Nica’s Panaderya during the panel discussion. Kakanin is a Filipino word used to call rice cakes which are commonly eaten as snacks or desserts in the Philippines.
