Event description
Online seminar series on 'Multilingualism and Languages of The Gambia'.

About this event

The Gambia is well known for its linguistic diversity. English, the official language, co-exists with around a dozen other languages. Seven of these are indigenous to, or widely spoken in, The Gambia, and are called ‘national languages’: Fula, Jola, Mandinka, Manjaku, Serahule, Serer or Wolof.

This seminar series on Multilingualism and Languages of The Gambia (curated by the Multilingual Education in The Gambia project in collaboration with the University of The Gambia) will bring together scholars who have researched multilingualism in The Gambia. Possible topics include:

  • linguistic insights into specific Gambian languages
  • teachers’ use of Gambian languages as languages of learning and teaching to facilitate inclusive education
  • (trans)languaging perspectives on multilingualism/multilingual education approaches in The Gambia
  • language-in-education policy in The Gambia
  • national language literacy / early parallel biliteracy in The Gambia
  • language contact in The Gambia
  • varieties of Gambian languages

If you would like to present as part of our Multilingualism and Languages of The Gambia online seminar series, please send a 500-word abstract via the Contact us form on our project website: megambia.com. This seminar series will be held online on Friday 16 July, 23 July, 30 July and 6 August 2021 between 12 and 1pm BST. Attendance will be free. The presentations of our speakers will need to be video recorded. You will have to send us a video recording of your presentation (e.g. using screencast-o-matic.com). We will give you guidelines on how to do this if necessary. Research students with relevant expertise are welcome. Dates:

  • Submission is now OPEN
  • Abstract deadline: 12 April 2021
  • Acceptance of abstract proposals: 26 April
  • Dates of seminars: Friday 16 July, 23 July, 30 July and 6 August 2021 between 12 and 1pm BST

Presentations will last one hour in total (30 minutes for the pre-recorded presentation and 25 minutes for questions from the audience – LIVE). A discussant will be invited to moderate the questions and answers at the end of each talk.

Thank you. Please circulate.
