Museum Development North West (MDNW), Museum Development Yorkshire (MDY) and Museum Development North East (MDNE) are hosting Accreditation refresher workshops for museums in the North of England, concentrating on the areas of the Standard that have to be reviewed at least once every five years.

These interactive online workshops are open to all museums across the three regions. They will be hosted by Accreditation Advisers Emma Chaplin (MDNW), Kelly Chapman (MDY) and Heather Lomas (MDNE), with additional input from Collections Trust.

Each refresher session will provide museums with:

• An overview of key topics

• Top tips for meeting this area of the Accreditation standard

• Opportunities to ask questions and discuss issues

• Signposting and links to helpful resources

• Networking and sharing with museums from across all three regions

Our aim is for participants to leave the session with increased knowledge and understanding of the topic plus the confidence to implement this area of the Museum Accreditation standard.

This workshop will cover Collections Development Policy, section 4.2. A policy, approved by the governing body, for developing collections, including acquisitions and disposals and will be led by Collections Trust alongside Emma Chaplin online.

This session will focus on Collections Development Policy, as part of the requirements for Museum Accreditation, looking at the Accreditation Collections Development Policy template and relevant Spectrum policy questions.

The session will explore how to develop a policy, and its value in forward planning and decision-making. We will consider themes relevant to the policy such as organisation responsibilities, risk management, legal and ethical considerations, and troubleshooting. We will focus on the responsibilities and areas most relevant to museum trustees.

By the end of the session, delegates will:

• Understand what a Collections Development Policy is and what it should contain.

• Understand how to develop a Collections Development Policy that is fit for purpose

• Understand the role and value of a Collections Development Policy in decision-making and prevention of common problem areas.

• Know where to find more information and guidance

The session is suitable for trustees, senior leaders and decision makers.
