Event description

Description

The Museums Collection Centre stores a huge variety of objects from the City’s Social History, Applied Arts and Childhood collections. We also have a small conservation lab. The building is accessible but some objects are stored on an upper floor accessed by a wide metal staircase with open risers and a handrail. Accessible toilets are available.

Tours are approximately one hour; unfortunately it is not possible to provide seating during the tour in the store. Please email museumcollectionscentre@edinburgh.gov.uk or call 01315569536 if you have any access needs or special interest requests. We aim to make adjustments to the tour route where possible.

Find out more about the behind the scenes work going on at the Museum Collections Centre on our Reekie Untold blog.

Tours are led by Museum Collections Centre staff and volunteers. Because we all have our own interests and perspectives, each tour is different.

October 2nd - Trials, Tribulations and Titillations of Scottish Social History

Join Chi (Inspiring Volunteer Nominee 2018) on an entertaining and eclectic jaunt through the bowels of the Museums Collection Centre. This special tour will give you an exclusive insight into the dedicated work done at MCC and the incredible objects that are stored there. You will be in a unique position to see an array of incredible artefacts up close and you will hear about the fantastic stories behind them. The tour will look at objects from domestic, public and private life. It will be intriguing, interesting and sometimes gruesome. There will be something for everyone.

November 6th - Women's Lives in Edinburgh

As artists, merchants, mothers, activists, and more, women have played an important role in the history of Edinburgh. Their stories are often hidden in plain sight: on the outside of a familiar building, the bottom of a piece of pottery, or a cardboard sign that might get thrown away. Explore behind the scenes at the Collections Centre to see what's not on display in the city museums, learn about how these objects are preserved and stored, and find out how Edinburgh Museums are working to record women's lives in the present day.

December 4th - Material Matters: How we craft, collect and conserve Edinburgh's history

Come explore the vast variety of objects held in the Museum Collection Centre store and discover the lesser known history of the city. How It's Made meets How It Degrades, we'll learn about our material past and why it's so important to store and protect it. Featuring antique glass, weird uses for wood and melting dolls, this is a unique behind the scenes tour showcasing the complications of museum work and a treasure trove time capsule of history up close.

February and March - tour guide to be confirmed. More details to come.
