Golf and Conflict at St Andrews 1552-1946

The links between golf and conflict go back to the game’s earliest history. In this lecture from one of our curators, Kieran George, discover 400 years of golf and conflict at St Andrews. Learn about the fate of Archbishop Hamilton, author of the famous 1552 charter, where golf at St Andrews is mentioned for the first time.

From the Rabbit Wars to the end of the Second World War, the lecture explores how conflict has shaped golf at St Andrews over four centuries.

This lecture ties in the themes of our temporary exhibition Bunker Shots: Stories of Golf and Conflict, which was curated by Kieran and runs until Spring 2026.

Doors will open from 6.30pm, with tea and coffee available upon arrival.
