Luke Jerram’s world-renowned Museum of the Moon comes to Wirral as part of this year’s Borough of Culture programme, and attendees can expect to see the moon suspended in the stunning surroundings of the Assembly Room of the Grade II* listed Birkenhead Town Hall. Entrance to Museum of the Moon is free of charge but requires booking in advance, some events are chargeable.

For opening weekend, Museum of the Moon will be open from 11am on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 October, with last entry at 6pm each day. Museum of the Moon will then be open Wednesdays – Saturdays, plus an additional opening on Tuesday 29 October during school half-term. It will be open from 11am – 6pm throughout.

During the three weeks, visitors will be able to experience extremely detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. Each centimetre of the 7m internally lit sculpture represents 5km of the moon’s surface. The installation is a fusion of lunar imagery, moonlight and surround sound composition created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award-winning composer Dan Jones.

The world-famous installation will be accompanied by a special programme of lunar-inspired events. These include free drop-in performances of The Glamournauts by Mooncup Theatre on Wednesday 30 October which charts 50 years of female achievement across the cosmos. There will also be a ticketed evening performance by the 18th Century Concert Orchestra on Wednesday 13 November. More details of all these events can be found on visitwirral.com.

The Borough of Culture initiative was introduced by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and is designed to encourage cultural activities across the region. Wirral’s events this year have been inspired by discovery, exploration and the great outdoors.

Museum of the Moon is a touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram. Co-commissioned by a number of creative organisations brought together by Luke Jerram and Norfolk & Norwich Festival. These include: We The Curious, Kimmel Center, Lakes Alive, Provincial Domain Dommelhof, Brighton Festival, Greenwich+Docklands International Festival, Without Walls, Les Tombées de la Nuit, Rennes and Cork Midsummer Festival. The artwork has also been created in Councilship with the UK Space Agency, University of Bristol and The Association for Science and Discovery Centres.
