Museum Safety and Security

About this event 

This training session will offer an introduction to Museum Safety and Security and will cover:

• The importance of Heritage  

• The current threats people, collections, buildings, and data 

• Heritage Crime – what it is and what motivates it 

• The science behind Crime Prevention in relation to our buildings and collections and those work to protect them. 

Learning Objectives 

By the end of the session, attendees will:

• Understand the concept of security within a museum and heritage setting  

• Know what they should be thinking about with regards to the security of museum buildings, collections and people  

• Understand what motivates criminal activity  

• Be aware of and understand the science of Crime Prevention   

• Have gained confidence in carrying out security audits  

• Be aware of resources and tools build a toolkit for use within their organisations   

The event will be delivered via Zoom using a range of exercises and interactive features including Chat and will include a short break. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and actively participate in discussion. About the trainer 

This presentation will be delivered by Stephen Armson – Smith, Heritage Crime Prevention Consultant and Director at SJAS Heritage Crime Prevention. After 45 years with Essex Police, 15 years of which he was Design Out Crime Officer and Heritage Crime Prevention Lead, he retired in September 2024 and now works as a freelancer advising and training professionals and organisations within the museum and heritage sector, to protect heritage assets and those who work with them. 

Who should attend? 

This event is aimed at beginners or those in need of a refresh. You do not need any prior experience to attend. 

 Maximum two delegates per organisation. Priority will be given to delegates from non-NPO and non-National museums in the Midlands which are Accredited or officially Working Towards Accreditation.

If you do not complete this form, we will be in contact and reserve the right to cancel your ticket if we do not receive a response.
