Introduction

This workshop will introduce the basic principles of digitisation from planning through to implementation. It will look at how to scope out and plan a digitisation project, and provide an introduction to the practicalities of carrying out different types of digitisation.

Participants will also learn about documentation best practice, and the importance of this in relation to digitisation projects.


Who should attend?

Any member of museum staff, volunteer or trustee who is keen to learn more about digitisation and documentation, or is planning on undertaking a digitisation project in the future.


What will you learn?

  • How to plan for digitisation (including scoping, writing a plan and finding funding)

  • How documentation best practice dovetails with digitisation projects

  • The importance of Digital Asset Management

  • Practical considerations for digitisation projects including what you are digitising, how much you are undertaking, and what equipment you will need

  • Practical, hands-on digitisation practice

Session Leaders:

This session will be led by Sarah Brown and Victoria Hopton

Victoria Hopton is the Digital Engagement Officer for South West Museum Development. Previously Victoria worked in the Library and Information sector specialising in training, information and digital literacy, and marketing. Most recently, Victoria managed the social media activities at Bath Spa University Library, was responsible for user experience, marketing and communications, and website development.

Sarah Brown is the Outreach Officer for Collections Trust. Sarah joined Collections Trust in late April 2016. Originally training as a conservator, Sarah has worked in a variety of collections management and care roles across the UK, including National Museums Scotland and Powell-Cotton Museum in Kent.

As part of Collections Trust’s Arts Council England funded Activity Plan, Sarah will be delivering around 100 events across the English regions, developed in collaboration with the ACE Museum Development teams. The programme will be varied, with themes and delivery approach responding to local needs, ranging from digitisation to documentation planning and backlogs.
