Description

About the Day

An informative and practical day for beginners, covering the basics of marketing in a museum setting.

We’ll look at case studies from the sector, and will discuss some marketing fundamentals – such as articulating your offer, understanding the key elements of branding and design, thinking about audiences and discussing some of the most popular engagement tools used by museum marketers.

Who should attend?

Museum staff and volunteers who have limited marketing experience, and who would like a session on the basics. This session is aimed at beginners, and we don’t expect this to be suitable for existing Marketing Officers or Marketing Managers.

What will you learn?

After the day’s session you should:

  • Have a better understanding of how to match potential audiences to your museum

  • Feel more confident discussing branding and design

  • Feel inspired to approach marketing your museum and exhibitions in new, more structured ways

  • Have heard relevant case studies from the sector

How does this session relate to Arts Council England’s Accreditation Standard?

The course supports the following Requirements of the Accreditation Standard:

3.2.3 The museum must communicate effectively with users and potential users through a range of accessible marketing and promotional activities.

This course will give you the insight and knowledge about marketing and audiences to help you develop your marketing strategy and plans to meet this requirement.

Session Leaders:

This session is led by Victoria Hopton, who is the Digital Engagement Officer for South West Museum Development. Previously Victoria worked in the Library and Information sector specialising in training, information and digital literacy, and marketing. Most recently, Victoria managed the social media activities at Bath Spa University Library, was responsible for user experience, marketing, and website management.

Lauren McGuffog is Marketing and Communications Officer for Bristol Culture, and manages marketing campaigns for Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, M Shed, the Red Lodge, the Georgian House Museum and Bristol Record Office.

Rebecca Clay is Heritage Marketing Manager for Bath and North East Somerset Council and responsible for managing marketing activity across the Roman Baths, Victoria Art Gallery, the Fashion Museum and Bath Record Office.
