Event description

Description

About the Day

This will be a packed day of talks, discussions and activities to give you all the information you need to write, review, test and use the Emergency Plan for your museum. How do you start? What should you include? How to satisfy Accreditation requirements. What to put in your Emergency Kit. We’ll cover it all, in one day, so fasten your seatbelt – it’s going to be packed!

Who should attend?

Anyone who works in a museum, paid or volunteer, whether your museum is preparing to write the Emergency Plan, partway through the process or reviewing an existing Plan.

What will you learn?

You will learn what an Emergency Plan is for, what should be included and how to go about collecting the information you need. You will write a Risk Assessment, draft a procedure for responding to an emergency situation and devise ways to test the plan and train to use it with your colleagues at the museum. You will consider what to put in an Emergency Kit, where to keep it and how to use it.

How does this session relate to Arts Council England’s Accreditation Standard?

The Accreditation Standard requires a museum to have: “Section 1.9 …a clear, workable emergency plan which includes all buildings in which collections are used”, with arrangements for workforce, visitors and the collections including clear evacuation and salvage procedures and an intact emergency kit. The plan must be communicated with external stakeholders, used in training with the workforce and regularly tested and reviewed.

Session Leader:

Helena Jaeschke, ACR, is an accredited objects conservator who trained in archaeological conservation. As the Conservation Development Officer for the South West, she provides free advice and support for all the museums in the region and has assisted museums in recovery after major and minor emergencies.
