Description

About the Day

How do we build a strong and engaged board? How do we engage board members in creative conversations and invite them to contribute their ideas with enthusiasm? How do we ensure that we pay attention to and draw on members’ diverse perspectives and expertise? This session explores how more engaging board meetings can help to build a stronger board.

Who should attend?

The workshop is designed for experienced museum board members. Newer board members who are familiar with basic roles and responsibilities will also find it useful, and it may be appropriate for some staff involved in supporting their board.

What will you learn?

In this workshop, our objectives are to enable you and fellow Board members to:

• Create conversations which draw on the very best thinking and the collective wisdom of all members of the Board

• Ensure that Boards bring their attention to what matters most for the organisation

• Strengthen Boards as teams where each member is able to play a full part and see the benefit of their contribution

• Reach clear decisions in the best interests of the organisation and its charitable goals

• Embrace and positively manage risk in order to move the organisation forward and fulfil its charitable objectives.

How does this session relate to Arts Council England’s Accreditation Standard?

The course supports all the Requirements of the Accreditation Standard in that, without good governance, no museum, particularly museums constituted as charities, will be able to prosper and develop as envisioned by Accreditation.

More specifically it supports Requirements 1.3 Appropriate Management Arrangements, 1.4 Effective Forward Planning and 1.7 Appropriate Workforce, in numbers and experience, for the museum’s responsibilities and plans. Museum Boards often bring together a disparate group of highly skilled individuals: it takes vision and hard work for them to become an effective Governing Body.
