Introduction

This is a comprehensive introductory session to help you with all aspects of caring for your collection. The day will be a mix of lectures, discussions and activities. Handouts will be provided for each delegate.

Who should attend?

Volunteers and paid staff who work with any sort of museum collection who would like to learn the basics of caring for objects.

What will you learn?

You will know the main risks facing objects in museums, how items should be handled, stored and displayed as well as simple ways to improve conditions.

You will also learn how to plan and record collection care, monitor the environment and safeguard against pests.

You are welcome to bring one problem item (or photos of it) for discussion.


How does this course support you to achieve and maintain Arts Council England’s Accreditation Standard?

The course supports the following Requirements of the Accreditation Standard:

2.4 Care and Conservation Policy and 2.6 Care and Conservation Plan – preventive conservation (measures to slow down or minimize deterioration of museum objects) must be a key strand of your Collections Care and Conservation Policy and the basis of a Care and Conservation Plan that sets out procedures for your workforce to follow and the steps you will take to improve collections care.

Session Leader

Helena Jaeschke, ACR, is an accredited objects conservator who trained in archaeological conservation. As the Conservation Development Officer for the South West, she provides free advice and support for the museums in the region.
