Discover how, in Essex 2020 a year of science and creativity, the resources in local museums can inspire your students in STEAM subjects.

Speakers include Richard Freeman (CEO of always possible/Essex 2020) and Wendy James (initiator of My Primary School is at the Museum).

My Primary School is at the Museum is an inspiring project that set out to explore the learning, social and cultural outcomes for primary school children and their families when a significant portion of learning took place in a museum setting. The full report can be viewed here.

Find out how STEM Ambassadors can support young people in STEM subjects including career talks, mentoring, practical workshops and exhibitions.

Get hands-on in practical breakout sessions led by Essex Museums:

  • Braintree Museum's Rocket Design Challenge
  • Chelmsford Museums with Marconi's Magic Maths
  • Essex Fire Museum will be Keeping Communities Safe: Flooding and Rescue (including 3d water maze)
  • The Fry Art Gallery will discuss The Fry Out and About which puts original and reproduction art works in schools
  • Discovering the stories behind the artefacts with Halstead Museum and Library
  • Magic of Science - Electricity, Magnets and more with Museum of Power
  • Colchester Museum gets hands-on archaeology
  • Royal Gunpowder Mills design and launching air powered vehicles
  • Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome sets challenges including 3D printing and CAD, paper aeroplanes and aerodynamics, woodworking including building a manganelle, and coding using Raspberry Pi and Microbit
  • Discover science of the Second World War with Coalhouse Fort and Thurrock Museum.

Also confirmed for the day are Southend Museums, Essex Libraries and Epping and Ongar Railway.

A marketplace will showcase what else is on offer in Essex museums and enable you to discuss your future visits directly with museum staff.

You can join us for the whole or part day but please note the marketplace will only be available between 12 - 2.

Travelling to the museum

You can arrive by train from Bures, Sudbury or Marks Tey direct to Chappel & Wakes Colne station where the museum is based.

If you are you are travelling by car, Chappel and Wakes Colne is about 8 miles from Colchester. There is free parking on the station approach and accessible parking in the museum yard.
