In June 2013 the Powell-Cotton Museum received Renaissance Strategic Support funding from the Arts Council England to deliver a 2 year project with the goal to raise awareness and increase access to their collections and to diversify their audience. A key aspect to this project is the redevelopment of a gallery, to transform it into an area for research, hands on learning and providing a context to the museum collection. Over 600 objects from the museum’s handling collection will be housed in the new gallery where visitors will be able to touch, play and research them.
This will be a practical session exploring the different processes and procedures used to raise the status of the handling collection and looking at how it has been used throughout the project for consultation, workshops and interpretation.
