Who is this workshop for?
This afternoon workshop is completely free to attend, and is open to anybody interested in taking part in Museums at Night in 2016 and beyond. Museums at Night is Culture24’s annual after-hours festival showcasing the arts and heritage sector, which each year offers a great audience development opportunity.
Whether you’re a staff member or volunteer, MDO or Town Centre Manager; based in a museum, gallery, library, archive or heritage site; and whether your organisation has never taken part in the festival before or has frequently run after-hours events, but would like more inspiration or guidance about PR and marketing; this friendly, practical workshop is here to help and support you.
What is the Connect! competition?
Connect! is a competition giving UK cultural and heritage organisations the chance to win a participatory artist-led Museums at Night event and a £3,000 bursary. Further information about the 2016 Connect! artists (pictured above) and how to take part is on the Museums at Night website.
Museums, galleries and heritage sites of all sizes have won the Connect! competition in the past, and we'er keen to help as many organisations as possible at this workshop, we'll give you tips and guidance on how to leverage your participation and the public vote to attract publicity and reach new audiences.
What can you expect at the workshop?
You’ll find out about the benefits and challenges involved in hosting an after-hours event, what it takes to be a Connect! winner, and what it’s like to host a top artist from the people who have done it before.
Double Connect! winner Matt Chesney from BACKLIT will explain how his team created compelling event ideas and social media marketing campaigns to attract public votes: they won the chance to work with artists Mat Collishaw in 2013 and Gillian Wearing in 2015.
This workshop also offers a unique opportunity to hear first-hand from Connect! artist Luke Jerram, who will share his experience of developing successful participatory events, along with tips for venues interested in working with artists. Luke’s Museums at Night project in October 2015 involved creating the Harrison’s Garden installation out of 1000 clocks at the Thelma Hulbert Gallery in Honiton.
We’ll also look at overcoming challenges and difficulties in programming creative after-hours events, and best practice in event PR and marketing.
By the end of the workshop, you should leave confident about the next steps you’ll take towards running a successful Museums at Night event.
The workshop takes place on Monday 1st February in the Grand Jury Room at the Galleries of Justice in Nottingham. The room is accessible by lift, and the venue’s full accessibility statement is here.
Doors open at 1pm for tea and coffee, the workshop kicks off at 1:15 and will finish at 4:30pm.
Mid-afternoon refreshments will be provided, and there will be plenty of opportunities to network with colleagues from the region. We look forward to meeting you!
