Event description
What is Museum Futures?

About this Event

The Museum Futures programme is a paid traineeship to support new candidates into the museum sector who are interested in gaining digital skills. Each trainee will be based for a year at their museum but will benefit from the UK wide partnership of other participating museums through monthly training sessions and a network of trainees.

Trainees will be paid a bursary of £13,350 (tax free) and work towards a Level 3 Diploma in Cultural Heritage.

The traineeship will start in January 2020.

Why should you attend a taster day?

The Taster Day is an opportunity to learn more about the programme, the role with the Collections team, and the application process. Potential applicants will be able to explore what it is like working at Birmingham Museums Trust (BMT), take part in activities, and speak with staff from a variety of departments. Attendance at the taster day is strongly encouraged as it will help you understand the role and ask questions before you apply.

What is the role?

The Museum Futures trainee will work as part of the Collections Team to help BMT to improve access to information about objects and collections for staff, visitors, and online audiences. The chosen candidate will be trained in the digitisation process, including the use of a digital SLR camera and scanner, collections care (including object handling) and inventorying collection data for the museum’s collections management system (CMS). The trainee will also support the Digital team in making the collection images available in the museum’s Digital Asset Management System.

Who should apply?

Because trainees will complete Level 3 diploma and gain in-work skills training and experiences to build their CV, we encourage young people aged 18-24 that have not completed an undergraduate degree to apply.  Candidates with over 6 months paid or unpaid experience of working in a museum and/or a postgraduate qualification are not eligible to apply.

We particularly welcome applications from candidates that live within Birmingham wards and from candidates that are under-represented in the museum sector, including black and minority ethnic candidates.

How to apply?

If you plan on attending the taster, day just register here and show up. We will give you all the information you need to apply and even give you tips for filling out the application.

If you are unable to attend the taster day, you can find an application form for BMT opportunity on the Museum Futures website.
