About this Event

Spend a day with John Wright, author of the River Cottage Mushroom Handbook, learning to identify mushrooms and toadstools.

The day will begin with an introduction and the all-important 'forager's nip' to steady the nerves. We will spend the day looking for fungi and John will identify everything (well, nearly everything) that we find. Puddletown Forest is an excellent place to see mushrooms and toadstools as the pine and spruce have many associated fungal species. The day is primarily about identification, with John explaining what to look out for when trying to work out which species a specimen belongs to. However, edibility and toxicity will be discussed in depth. If we are very lucky, there might be a few edible specimens to be found and we will have a fry-up.

A little bit about John in his own words, “I live in a village in West Dorset with my wife and two teenage daughters. I am one of those very lucky people who have managed to turn a hobby (chiefly fungus hunting) into a job. Until recently I worked as a country cabinet maker (also a hobby which turned into a job, as it happens), now I spend my time foraging, and encouraging others to forage through my writing, forays, talks and, occasionally, TV and radio appearances. If you think this sounds at all fun then you are quite right.”

The cost of this day is £70 and includes a light picnic lunch.
