The purpose of this event is to present the work of The Arts of Inclusion (TAI) network and discuss the role of music for other-than-musical purposes, with examples form a recent book by TAI members, Music and Social Inclusion https://eprints.gla.ac.uk/280374/

This event will offer opportunities for networking, and is open to higher education staff and doctoral students, as well as practitioners interested in the topic. TAI started in 2019 supported by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council and Royal Society of Edinburgh as a network of academics and practitioners aimed at building expertise to critically assess the role of performing arts practices for social inclusion and conflict transformation. Initially with members from UK and Latin America, the network has grown ever since. TAI is interdisciplinary and is based at the University of Glasgow.

11:00am - Welcome and outline of the day (Professor Oscar Odena, Principal Investigator)

11:15am - Keynote: Exploring the gap between aspirations and actualities in post-war music projects - Dr Gillian Howell (Zoom). This presentation will explore some of the ways that the complexity of post-war music projects can see them fall short of their aspirations. It will share examples from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Timor-Leste, and Afghanistan, and consider what these reveal about music as an instrument of social change.

12:15pm - Lunch

1:00pm - Keynote: Hip-hop and the non-governmental ear: notes from Mexico City - Dr Andrew Green. This talk engages a project entitled Hip-Hop Transformación, in which a non-governmental organization in Iztapalapa, Mexico City held a competition in which hundreds of rappers participated, and aided a number of winners to record their music. It is interested in how the intermediary position of an NGO – between local and governmental stakeholders – implicates different modes of listening. To explore this multi-faceted listening posture, it proposes the concept of “the non-governmental ear”, and explores it in relation to the music recorded for this project.
