Event description
Music To My Ears: Neuroscience and music analysis

About this Event

Join Mark Richards, Senior Deputy Head Academic at Queen Anne’s School to explore; What is music analysis? What do we listen out for in music? How does the brain, mind and ear engage in systematic forms of music analysis?

  • This training session will offer an opportunity to address these questions by engaging in a detailed analysis of several musical scores.
  • In this session we will also develop the work of David Huron: Sweet Anticipation in Music and the Psychology of Expectation with a focus on the ITPRA Theory of Expectation – a mnemonic for the sequence of five expectation-related responses: imagination response, tension response, prediction response, reaction response and appraisal response. The ability to read music in this session would be beneficial.

About Mark Richards, Senior Deputy Head Academic at Queen Anne’s School

Mark won an open scholarship to read music at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth studying with Professor David Wulstan. Mark then secured a British Academy award leading to the successful competition of an MMus in Theory and Analysis at King’s College, London, supervised by Professor Arnold Whittall; further research in the music of Webern continued at Cardiff University. Mark has tutored at several universities (Cardiff, Bristol and Open University), but his main focus has been school teaching. At present he is Senior Deputy Head at Queen Anne’s School in Caversham – an independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11-18; Mark also teaches A Level Music at Queen Anne’s. Mark is an experienced school inspector and A Level and IB examiner; he has also written several books and articles associated with A Level Music. Mark has a deep interest in music analysis, in particular Schenkerian analysis, set theory, semiology in music and proportional analysis. When away from school leadership and music, Mark enjoys North Devon coastal walks with his wife, Claire and their three golden retrievers, Paddington, Bertie and Monty.Synopsis of session:
