The UCL Centre for Research on the Dynamics of Civilization (CREDOC) presents two discussions of:

MUSLIM RESPONSES TO WESTERNIZATION

Panel discussion on Living in non-Islamic societies

  • Faisal Devji (Modern South Asian History, University of Oxford) on India as a world in miniature and the creation within it of a pluralist imagination.

  • Claire Dwyer (Migration Research Unit, Geography, UCL) on how issues of ‘integration’ are contested and constructed by British Muslims drawing on research on state-funded Muslim schools and university Islamic Societies.

  • Myriam Hunter-Henin (Faculty of Laws, UCL) on recent debates over how the Fundamentally British Values discourse shapes Muslim identities.

  • Respondent: John Esposito (Founding Director of Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, Georgetown University, Washington).

Tea or coffee will be available just before the start of the event. All are welcome.

The panel discussion will be preceded by a lecture the day before on Retreat from the Secular Path, given by John Esposito from 6 to 8 pm on Thursday 7 December 2017 in the IAS Common Ground.
