About this event

Community • Heritage

Hosted by Volunteer Centre Kensington & Chelsea and Notting Dale Community Champions, in conjunction with RBKC’s Black History Month, this free workshop celebrates the power of artistic expression within Afrikan Heritage communities.

Inspired by the words of activist Claudia Jones"A People’s Art Is the Genesis of Their Freedom" — this session, facilitated by Isis Amlak, explores how literature, poetry, music, visual art, and storytelling have long been tools of resistance, survival, and transformation across Black movements in the UK and globally.

Come and uncover the stories, symbols, and creative voices that have shaped cultural identity, empowered generations, and driven social change. This is more than a history lesson — it’s a celebration of art as activism and a call to stand firm in power and pride.

What to Expect:

  • Inspiring discussion on the role of art in Black liberation movements
  • Reflections on cultural resilience and historical resistance
  • A chance to connect, learn, and be creatively inspired
