Description

Bill Tancred is a leading sports administrator, academic and a former international athlete and coach. He competed at the 1968 and 1972 Summer Olympics in the discus and won bronze and silver medals in successive Commonwealth Games from 1970 to 1974. He was the British National discus champion on nine occasions and held the British record for 25 years his personal best being 64.94m in 1974. On competitive retirement, he became coach to the British Amateur Athletics board and to the International Amateur Athletics Federation.

A local resident of Suffolk, he was a former regular soldier with the 1st East Anglian regiment and the Royal Army Physical Training Corps. After military service in Aden and at the royal Military Academy, Sandhurst he attended Loughborough College and the University including West Virginia University, USA on a NATO Fellowship. As an academic he has taught in schools, polytechnics and universities as well as being Director of Sport & Exercise Science at both Sheffield Universiy and the University of Suffolk.

Bill is a published author having written a number of books and has also presented papers at conference both in the UK and internationally during his career including membership in many sports administration organisations to include the Olympians.

A Winston Churchill Fellow and Hall of Fame recipient in the USA, he was awarded an MBE in 1992 for services to athletics.
