Event description
Richard Curen, leading forensic psychotherapist, gives some perspectives on working with people with intellectual disability.

About this Event

Who is this event for?

This event is for psychotherapists, counsellors, teachers, social workers: anyone working in the field of learning disability.

About the talk

The psychodynamic treatment of people with intellectual disabilities and sexual perversions is still in its infancy. Using case-based material this presentation will explore some of the ways in which the pioneering work of Alan Corbett, Valerie Sinason and Estela Welldon and others provides a richer understanding of the intersection of psychodynamic theory and ‘forensic disability psychotherapy.’ Material from the treatment of a number of patients with intellectual disabilities will explore the impact of early losses on the development of sado-masochistic preoccupations. The turning inwards and outwards of psychic pain will be explored.

About the Speaker

For more than 20 years Richard Curen has worked as a psychotherapist, supervisor, leader, consultant and trainer. Until recently he was employed as a consultant forensic psychotherapist at Respond in London, where he worked from 2002. He trained at the Gestalt Centre London and at the Portman Clinic where he is a supervisor and visiting lecturer. He works in private practice as a psychotherapist, consultant and clinical supervisor in statutory, private and third sector organisations.

He was previously an honorary psychotherapist in the Fitzjohn’s Unit at the Tavistock Clinic. He is Chair of the Forensic Psychotherapy Society, a member of the International Association for Forensic Psychotherapy, a member of the Institute of Psychotherapy and Disability, and is registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council and the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.
