Description

What's it Like to have a war with the mind?

Following a life-changing diagnosis in 2015, Eché Egbuonu has expanded the conversation regarding ill mental health chiefly with the "Prison by Another Name" workshops. On March 20th, 2020 – Eché will be releasing his debut novel "My Polar Opposites: The War of the Mind". The book draws inspiration from true events, recounting the story of a young man navigating the mental health system.

Based on a true story

For Victor, life was riddled with suffering. Repressed feelings, social anxiety, and neurosis plagued him severely limiting his prospects in the process. Just when things started to pick up his trajectory took a sharp turn for the worst following a life-changing diagnosis.

The novel "My Polar Opposites" tells the story of how Victor managed to achieve post-traumatic growth following the most harrowing series of events. The book chronicles the trials, tribulations and demons faced on the road to recovery.

By attending this showcase you will:

  • Be immersed in a powerful audiovisual experience
  • Leave with insights into the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to navigating the mental health system
  • Participate in the Q&A session
  • Hear from leaders and professionals in the community who work in the mental health sector
  • Connect with those committed to bringing about positive change in the community

Statistics suggest a black man in the UK is 17 times more likely than a white man to be diagnosed with a serious mental health condition such as schizophrenia or Bipolar Disorder.

The story has been shared in part on the BBC, Channel 4 and on BBC 1Xtra. The book tells the story in full, revealing insights that have not previously been shared. We will be exploring identity, duality, recovery and of course, mental health.
