Review:

John Bonham, Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, Neil Peart - drumming can be the most underappreciated (yet essential) component of any rock outfit, but there is nonetheless a bevy of recognisable names associated with the art. But such lists are incomplete and even in the world’s best-known bands, the drummer is often an enigma. Award-winning director Philip Sansom seeks to uncloak one such character - a drummer loved by drummers, and a drummer whose beats you have almost definitely danced to.

This drummer is Clem Burke, whose signature rolls have been heard throughout the musical world. He played most famously for Blondie, but also with the Ramones, with The Romantics, with Eurythmics, and he even had a stint in Bob Dylan’s band. The secret to his remarkable success is quickly demystified - Burke’s drumming is simply an extension of the man himself. If he’s not drumming, he’s not doing anything at all, and this is a man who’s always doing something. Sansom’s documentary follows Burke on the road, and it doesn’t look like he’s slowed down since Blondie’s heyday. In fact, the opposite is true - across one 24 hour stretch Burke drums at five different gigs. But as far as Clem is concerned, it’s all in a day’s work. / Review by Milo Garner
