Myanmar, a country in crisis the world has forgotten

Come join us at the Old Auction House for an eye-opening event discussing the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. Learn about the challenges faced by the people of Myanmar and how the world can help. This in-person event will feature a speaker who has firsthand experience in the region. Don't miss this opportunity to educate yourself and make a difference!

This talk will provide an update on events in Myanmar since the military coup of February 2021. By way of background, it will show how the legacy of Myanmar’s past has had an impact on the present situation there. It will include an assessment of the period of quasi-democracy when Aung San Suu Kyi and her party, the National League for Democracy, were in governmen between 2016 to 2021. With the Junta’s recent announcement of an end to the state of emergency and their plans to hold an election in December, it will consider what the future may hold for Myanmar and its people.

Aileen Prendergast holds an MSc in Global Politics from Birkbeck College, University of London (2008). She has in-country experience having lived in Myanmar for a number of years where she was a Senior Lecturer at a University in Yangon.
