Description

Myanmar Tea Evening
With Beverly Wainwright and Phyu Thwe

Come and hear about this exciting tea project and taste some exclusive handmade teas from Myanmar!

In November 2018, UK Tea Academy student Phyu Thwe took our Tea Sommelier course and during the few days she and Jane Pettigrew were together, she talked about the village she is from in Myanmar and told us that her family and others who live locally make green tea from local tea bushes, most of which are imported sinensis cultivars.

Phyu gave Jane some of the teas to taste and all the teas were quite astringent and rather bitter. So Jane suggested that Phyu talk to Beverly Wainwright, award winning Scottish tea maker and owner of The Scottish Tea Factory, to see if Beverly could perhaps visit Myanmar and help the villagers improve the flavour of their teas and also consider making some white teas and black from the same old trees.

So that’s what happened and in April, Phyu and Beverly went off to Myanmar and, within 6 weeks and with Beverly’s help and guidance, a factory had been built so that the tea makers could start experimenting with new processing techniques while also considering hygiene, health and safety, traceability etc.

The project is now on track to produce white green and black teas as well as local traditionally made tea and is creating jobs and a sustainable tea market in this small Myanmar village.

Now you have a rare chance to taste these beautiful handmade teas and hear all about Phyu and Beverly's project.

Join us on 18th July for this unique event.
