About this event
Fabricating with fungi
Join us to explore mycelium (the vegetative fibres of a mushroom) as a material experiment for design applications. Discover how mycelium can be grown into molded shapes using a variety of different techniques. You will learn how to design bespoke 3D printed and silicone cast moulds for fungi, to soft sculpting techniques with mycelium, and simply shaping growth with cardboard. In this workshop we will be discovering a range of different methods for sculpting mycellium and participants will leave with their own mycelium sculpture to finish growing at home
Don’t miss this hands-on immersive experience at Lifefabs, where science meets creativity at the forefront of a bio-design revolution.

Kirsten is a Scottish artist and biodesigner currently completing her MA in Biodesign at Central Saint Martins in London. Her latest body of work uses mycelium fabrication to provoke climate action and multispecies team ups. She is also working on combining traditional oil painting with place-based phytoremediation practices.Kirsten has worked as a teaching assistant at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and The Art Students League of New York. She has worked on and off site as an installation assistant for the 2019 Venice Biennale Icelandic Pavilion “Chromo Sapiens” by Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir/Shoplifter. About Lifefabs: Community Biofab Lab & Research SpaceLifefabs is an open access biofabrication space that provides graduates, creatives, schools, communities and scientists access to scientific learning and exchange knowledge around biofabrication.
We want to break down barriers to research and STEAM learning, offering a space to learn, experiment and contribute to our understanding of biomaterials and bioengineering. A space for interdisciplinary knowledge exchange, Lifefabs encourages non-scientists, local communities to feel welcome and be curious about Biodesign, promoting accessibility though hands-on community lab.
