Event description

Description

The Open Nest Charity is very happy to present our 2017 Conference:

Featuring the amazing poet and speaker Lemn Sissay alongside mothers whose children have been removed, adults who were adopted as children, adults who spent time in care, kinship carers, adopters, artists, therapists and social work academics (Some speakers of course fitting into more than one 'tick box'!)

This dynamic conference will invite attendees to question popular preconceptions about those involved in child protection. Through poetry, film and photography individuals will tell their stories and illustrate that 'myths and monsters' may be created when the complexities of child protection policy and practice are not critiqued within the context of political, cultural and individual circumstances.

Without due care and attention the information given and held on file about a families history can give a 'fake news' version of the bigger picture around events that caused child protection interventions. This in turn may hamper an individual's human rights to accurate life story, individual and family identity and the maintaining of important connections and relationships.

The day will aim to examine how individuals may be better represented in mainstream media and popular culture and as a result receive more humane social care support and interventions.

Of interest to a wide audience.
