Description

Join us for this CPD Saturday where input will be provided by Pauline Tyson and Jo Skelton.

Pauline Tyson: What do you do when you haven’t got ‘the stuff?’

Much research has taken place over many years supporting the use of physical resources, pictures and images in developing conceptual understanding. Therefore, if these wonderful resources are not available, does this mean learning will be impoverished?

Based on Pauline’s recent and ongoing experiences, this input aims to provide a space for consideration of the learning behind the resources, and to offer some creative solutions to this question.

Jo Skelton: How can trainee teachers with maths anxiety be supported to become confident teachers of primary mathematics?

Maths anxiety (MA) is generally defined as a negative response to a current or perceived experience, involving doing some form of maths (Hill et al., 2016; Young et al., 2012). According to a 2018 MORI poll, 20% of adults in the UK have some form of maths anxiety. There is also evidence to suggest that MA is transferred from teacher to pupil (Maloney and Beilock, 2012).

In this session, Jo will present established strategies from action research, which help trainee teachers to both feel more confident in doing maths themselves and in teaching maths to primary-aged pupils. She will discuss the implications of these for newly qualified and/or less confident teachers who may benefit from gaining confidence in their own maths teaching

Updates from the world of mathematics education and CPD will also be provided, as well as opportunities to network.

This event is open to members (free) and non-members (£35 or become a member on the day for £45).
