Event description

Description

The UCL Institute of Education, in conjunction with the Association of Colleges (AoC) London, are providing two conferences, at no cost to participants, giving the opportunity to engage with two formative projects focusing on key developments in vocational and further education. Participants may attend one of the events or both.

National Conference – Area Based Reviews in London

Registration from 10.00am

10.30am-12.30pm

The Centre for Post-14 Education and Work at UCL Institute of Education in conjunction with the Association of Colleges (AoC) has been undertaking a three-year study of the Area Based Review (ABR) process as undertaken across London. The final report of the project narrates not only the third year of data as the ABR recommendations are being implemented, but also provides an overview of development in ABRs in London since their inception together with a discussion of possible directions of development.

Initiated in 2016 by the Conservative Government ABRs were designed to create fewer and more viable college groupings in response to the impact of austerity policies on post-16 funding. ABRs were also expected to create closer relationships between colleges and employers in the context of the technical and skills agenda, including the launch of a new standards-based apprenticeships. Other policy issues of relevance were the devolution agenda to localities and regions in key policy areas; and, of course, Brexit.

This conference provides the opportunity to explore with the researchers the main findings of their work and look to the future for building a viable system of Further Education across England.

National Conference – Vocational Education and Training in East London

Registration from 12.30pm

13.15-15.30

The East London Vocational Education and Training: Innovation through Partnership (ELVET) is a major programme aimed at supporting education, training, apprenticeship and employment opportunities for adults and young people in east London. It is designed to contribute to the provision of a qualified workforce for the area's fast-growing digital, creative and social care sectors.

Led by UCL Institute of Education in partnership with the Association of Colleges (AoC), ELVET supports four Innovation Projects led by Barking and Dagenham College, New City College (Hackney), Newham College and New City College (Tower Hamlets) in partnership with a range of employers and other education and training providers.

The programme concludes in August and this conference provides the opportunity, to explore with the programme team, key findings and look towards developing effective skills development systems through effective employer and provider partnerships.

Final programme to be confirmed shortly.
