National Grid’s Great Grid Upgrade, Onshore and Offshore

By North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers

Overview

The Great Grid Upgrade is a major overhaul of the on- and off-shore grid to bring new energy sources online, come along and find out more!

The Lecture is intended to bring to life National Grid’s Grid Upgrade (GGU), the largest overhaul of the electricity grid in generations. Reference will be made to several major infrastructure projects, principally subsea cable projects, at various stages of development and delivery. National Grid’s Eastern Green Link (EGL) 1, 2, 3 and 4 projects will be specifically discussed. The importance of the consenting process will also be highlighted, specifically in relation to project program and delivery.

Sean Stokoe, born in Hexham, Northumberland, is a town planner by qualification and profession. His early career was in the minerals industry, firstly with British Coal Opencast then with RMC Group. Sean moved to National Grid in 1998, and has since occupied multiple consenting, environmental assessment, and lands roles, moving into leadership and people management, and becoming Head of Offshore Consents in 2022. Sean now leads an exceptional team of consenting and environmental professionals, tasked with obtaining the development consents required to deliver a portfolio of major energy infrastructure projects, on land and in the sea. Sean is keen to relay that in his c30-year career with National Grid, never has the challenge, opportunity and reward been as great as it is now, as National Grid looks to deliver the Grid Upgrade (GGU), the largest overhaul of the electricity grid in generations.
