About this Event

The National Museum of Rural Life has now reopened. We can’t wait to welcome you back.

Book online in advance

Timed entry has been introduced to ensure that we can manage numbers and maintain physical distancing. Please book a timed entry ticket online in advance of your visit. This includes National Museums Scotland Members, National Museum of Rural Life Annual Pass holders and National Trust for Scotland Members.

Please book a ticket for each person in your party, including children under the age of 5. Please note that tickets can be booked for up to six people when tickets are available within your preferred time slot. Please only book tickets for yourself and your household, to help us comply with NHS Scotland's Test and Protect.

Visiting safely

A range of new safety measures have been put in place in line with Scottish Government guidelines. This includes pre-booked timed entry, face coverings, enhanced cleaning, sneeze screens, hand sanitising stations and one-way routes in certain areas of the museum where physical distancing is not possible.

We want you to have a safe and enjoyable visit. During your visit, we ask you to:

  • Please keep your distance from others (2m).
  • Use the hand sanitiser provided.
  • Wash your hands often.
  • Follow the directional signage.
  • Please note card payments only.
  • Face coverings must be worn by visitors over 5 in our indoor spaces and shops.

Please do not visit the museum if you or anyone in your household has any symptoms of Coronavirus.

When you book we will also collect your name, contact number and the date and time of your visit to support NHS Scotland’s Test and Protect service and we may share this information with the service up to 21 days following your visit. For more information please see our Terms and Conditions and Privacy Notice.

Face coverings

In line with Scottish Government guidelines, all visitors over the age of 5 must wear a face covering in our indoor spaces.

What’s open?

Please note: not all areas of the museum are currently open. Please visit our website for information on which areas will be open during your visit.

We have also developed a new museum map to show which parts of the site are open and what can be enjoyed during your visit, along with a new family trail.

Please note: the Farm Explorer tractor-trailer currently isn't running, so don’t forget to bring your wellies for the walk to the farm! We are also asking visitors not to pet the animals at the farm, including our farm cats.

Food and drink

Shielings Café is open, accepting card payments only.

National Museums Scotland Members receive a 20% discount in the café.

You are welcome to bring your own picnic to eat in our outdoor picnic area. Please dispose of your rubbish responsibly in the bins provided. Barbecues and gas stoves are not permitted.

Shop

The museum shop is open, accepting card payments only. Please note that in line with Scottish Government guidelines, face coverings must be worn in our shops.

National Museums Scotland Members receive a 10% discount on all shop purchases.

Outdoor play area

The outdoor play area is open with clear guidance on how to use the area and hand sanitiser nearby. We ask that children under 12 be supervised by one adult per household when using the play area.

We're Good to Go

“We’re Good To Go” is the official UK mark to signal that a tourism and hospitality business has worked hard to follow Government and industry COVID-19 guidelines and has a process in place to maintain cleanliness and aid social distancing.
