ABOUT THE EVENT
We’re delighted to be partnering with Rosehall Village Hall to celebrate National Poetry Day together on Friday, 3rd October. We will be holding three workshops between 11am-4pm to celebrate poetry and wildflowers.
The theme of National Poetry Day 2025 is “Play”—a joyful invitation to explore the playful side of poetry through language games, creative performances, and imaginative fun. In the UK, National Poetry Day falls on Thursday 2 October 2025 and this year’s celebrations are centred around that spirited, playful theme.
ABOUT THE DAY:11-1pm: Join artist Sally Purdy for a relaxing day of watercolour painting, inspired by the beauty of wildflowers. Drawing on poetry as a creative spark, you’ll learn how to bring wildflowers to life on the page through gentle guidance and watercolour techniques. £10
11–1pm: Join Jackie Pavlenko for a morning of poetry writing, exploring the theme of play—this year’s focus for National Poetry Day. £5
2–4pm: Sally will be leading her second poetry-inspired art session, influenced by wildflowers, to create wildflower postcards. £10
*If you wish to join both art classes, please pick the 'Both ART sessions' ticket to receive a price reduction.
Rosehall Village committee will be hosting a workshop with Paul Shanks around ekphrasis. Ekphrasis just means one type of art inspired by another.
Most often, it’s when someone writes a poem or story about a painting, but it could also be a painting inspired by a poem, or music written about a sculpture. It’s basically using creativity in one form to respond to creativity in another.
ABOUT OUR TUTORS:
Jackie Pavlenko is an acclaimed writer and led many sessions for us over the last year during our 'Flight Path' project, writing about birds and the impacts of Climate Change. You can find more info about Jackie on her website: https://www.pressingletters.co.uk
Sally Purdy also worked for us on our 'Flight Path' project, leading sessions devoted to 3 large mosaic pieces which she designed herself. She is a fabulous artist and very down-to-earth. You can currently find the aforementioned mosaics hanging up in Ferrycroft Visitor Centre.
ABOUT THE FUNDER
The wildflower postcard sessions have been kindly subsidised by funds from The National Lottery. Our project 'Mountains to Coast: A Wellness Journey' has been created to help adults reconnect with nature and improve isolation and mental wellbeing in rural areas.
