National Voices’ Conference on Integrated Care Systems

On 23 June 2022, National Voices are holding an online all-day national conference to bring together VCSE organisations, community groups and system leaders to strengthen our mutual commitment to better partnership. We are delivering this conference in partnership with the Policy Innovation and Research Unit and with generous support from NHS England.

We will be exploring the topic of Integrated Care Systems (ICSs), on the eve of ICSs becoming statutory bodies that cover the entirety of England. Now is the right moment to identify the changes we want to see as a result of this fundamental shift in the way the health and care system is organised. We want to see better, more equal outcomes for people, especially those not currently well supported by existing models. We also want to see more coordinated and effective care that enables people to live well, with fewer barriers between communities and formal services. It is important to note that the conference will not be explaining the basics of ICSs and so we recommend this King’s Fund explainer as preliminary reading.

We are delighted to share a full programme for the day. The event will open with our keynote speakers: Matthew Taylor, Chief Executive of NHS Confederation, will set out the ambition the NHS has for the ICS agenda and how a shift to a different relationship with communities can enable more holistic, inclusive and preventative approaches to health and care. Professor Robin Miller, Director of Global Engagement for College of Social Sciences from Birmingham University and Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Integrated Care will put this into context reflecting on ten years of integration efforts and what is needed to make them work.

We will then welcome Dr Rubina Ahmed, Director for Systems Engagement at Stroke Association and Samantha Ofoegbu, National Voices Lived Experience Partner for a panel discussion with questions from attendees, reflecting on perspectives from the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise sector.

Attendees will then split into seven different workshops. For more information about the workshops please read the programme, just some examples of the crucial topics we will cover are Core20PLUS5, Social Prescribing and VCSE Alliances.

The concluding session will be led by Sarah Sweeney, Head of Policy at National Voices. We will use this opportunity to recap some core learning from our workshops and aim to identify priority areas of action for us to strengthen the community focus of the emerging ICS landscape.
