Description

Learn how to dye with indigo, natural plant dyes and tea using Shibori, the ancient Japanese art of resist dyeing. You will learn the basic binding techniques and then dye a series of samples using natural dyes and indigo on cotton and silk. You will take home a sample book for future reference and a silk scarf that you have dyed as a project.

Over the 6 hour workshop you’ll master a variety of binding skills and learn all about indigo and how to dye with natural dyes:

- Use different bindings to resist dye and create pattern including the basic kamosage knot used to secure all bound work and how to make the kumo (spiderweb), ne maki (binding with beads) and tesuji (stripes) patterns using binding

- Understand different natural mordanting and dyeing methods:

* How to mordant your fabrics with Myrobalan, Aluminium acetate, Alum and iron

* How to dye your fabrics with the following natural plant dyes and indigo

  • Tansy (Yellow)

  • Madder (red)

  • Madder and Tansy (Orange)

  • Tansy and indigo (Green)

  • Myrobalan and indigo (Teal green)

  • Indigo - Blue

  • Madder and Indigo (Purple)

  • Tea (Brown)

  • Tea with rusty iron (brown and black)

* How to overdye with indigo and modify colours with Iron

- Unpick your finished work and reveal your designs.


SUITABLE FOR ALL LEVELS (Beginners Welcome!)

All materials and tools are provided. Includes pre-mordanted cotton and silk for samples that you will be able to take away as a sample book. Instructions on how to create and maintain your own indigo vat and how to dye with natural dye extracts and mordants will also be provided.

You will take home a set of samples for reference.

You will also dye a silk scarf with a design and colour combination of your choice.

Additional silk scarves, cotton hankies and cotton bags will be available to purchase on the day if you want to take other finished projects home with you.
