About this Event
Learn how to dye with indigo and natural plant dyes. You will learn the basic binding techniques and then dye a series of samples using natural dyes and indigo on cotton, silk and wool (cashmere!). You will take home a hardback sample book for future reference.
Over the 6 hour workshop you’ll master some shibori binding skills and learn all about indigo and how to dye with natural dyes:
- Use binding to resist dye and create pattern including the basic kamosage knot used to secure all bound work and how to make the ne maki (binding with beads) pattern using binding.
- Understand different mordanting and natural dyeing methods:
* How to mordant your fabrics with Myrobalan, Aluminium acetate, Alum and iron
* How to dye your fabrics with the following natural plant dyes and indigo to produce a wide range of colours:

Tansy or Heather Flowers (Yellow)

Madder (Red)
-
Indigo (Blue)
-
We will also dye with a Mystery dye which is different each time the workshop is run!
* How to overdye with indigo and modify colours with Iron
* How to overdye with a different coloured dye
- Unpick your finished work and reveal your designs.
IMPORTANT NOTE! Please note: The studio is up a flight of stairs and there is no lift and there are uneven floors in part of the building so not suitable for disabled access. This class is run at other locations with disabled access so please enquire direct if you would like to attend. Thank you.
SUITABLE FOR ALL LEVELS (Beginners Welcome!)
All materials and tools are provided. Includes pre-mordanted cotton, silk and wool fabric for samples that you will be able to take away as a sample book.
Instructions on how to create and maintain your own indigo vat and how to dye with natural dye extracts and mordants will also be provided.
