Event description

Description

Many plants and vegetables can be used to dye natural fabrics. On this one day workshop you will explore a range of natural dyes such as onion skins, turmeric and madder. You will also explore the use of mordants to help create a range of different colour textile samples.

The workshop aims to give you the skills and confidence to continue natural dyeing at home.

What experience do I need?

The workshop is a mixed level group and will be for everyone from those with no experience to those with an understanding of textile processes. Those with some previous experience can use the day to explore the use of a range of different dyes.

What will I make?

You will make a range of small coloured textile samples using a variety of different natural dyes and will also make a lot of notes to help you develop your ideas further at home.

Who is my tutor?

Kirstie Williams is a founding member of Leeds Print Workshop. She is a practising designer and printmaker creating both textile and paper based work.
She studied MA Textile Design at Chelsea College of Art in 2010 and completed a PGCE teaching qualification at the University of Huddersfield in 2014.
Kirstie works as an Associate Lecturer for Short Courses at Leeds College of Art, primarily teaching in adult education. She is passionate about bringing together a new creative community in Leeds through the running and development of Leeds Print Workshop.

Do I need to bring anything?

Basic materials such as such fabric samples and natural dyes will be provided on the day. Bring a notebook and pen with you.

You may wish to bring along some more natural fabrics such as cotton, silk, linen or wool along to try.
If you have any natural dyes you wish to try e.g. onion skins, red cabbage, beetroot, avocado skins and stones etc. please feel free to bring them along too.

If I can't attend can I get a refund?

We will refund you in full if you cancel no less than 14 days before the start of the first session of the course, after which no refunds will be issued. Once booked, you cannot transfer to another course.

What if the course is cancelled?

We reserve the right to cancel the course for any reason (for example, insufficient bookings). We will endeavour to give at least 7 days notice if the course is cancelled and in the event of cancellation we will, of course, issue you a full refund.

Accessibility

Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible but, due to the nature of the building, Leeds Print Workshop is not wheelchair accessible. There is a step up into the building and four steps down to the toilets, and no accessible toilet facilities. Should you have any questions, or wish to discuss accessibility before booking, please don't hesitate to email us at hello@leedsprintworkshop.org

Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
