Max Barclay

Senior Curator in Charge of Coleoptera, Natural History Museum

Natural History Collections: Drivers of Scientific Discovery

Bio: Max Barclay manages the Beetle collections at the Natural History Museum in South Kensington, a dedicated team of curators, and some 10 million specimens, going back to the voyages of Charles Darwin, Captain Cook and beyond. As the greatest collection of its kind, it is consulted each year by hundreds of scientists from all over the world to answer questions about the conservation, evolution and taxonomy of the beetles, arguably the most diverse group of organisms on the planet. Max is a life-long naturalist, and has travelled extensively in search of new discoveries.

From 8pm

Erica McAlister

Curator of diptera at the Natural History Museum

The secret life of flies

Bio: Erica McAlister

Entomologist Erica McAlister is a curator of diptera at the Natural History Museum, London. All through her life Erica has been interested in the little things - from her early fascination with decomposing cat spoils and their maggot fauna, to picking fleas off cats to study them jumping under a microscope. Erica has studied in France, Australia and Costa Rica and her work with diptera has taken her all around the world. She was also presenter on the popular BBC Radio 4 series Who's the Pest?
