Description

SAGE Ocean Speaker Series #6

Dong Nguyen is a research fellow at the Turing Institute and affiliated with Edinburgh University. Previously, she was a PhD student at the University of Twente. She is interested in developing text mining methods that can help answer questions from the social sciences and the humanities. She especially enjoys working with social media data. Her work has been featured by various news outlets, including the New York Times and Time Magazine. She has a Master’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University.

About the talk: Massive digital datasets provide the opportunity to study language use and behaviour on a very large scale. However, to fully leverage their potential for research in the social sciences and humanities, new computational approaches are needed. Dong will discuss projects in collaboration with social scientists to understand motivations in online health campaigns as well as a project in collaboration with folk narrative researchers on narrative similarity. Concluding the talk with a discussion of a few big challenges in doing interdisciplinary computational text analysis, drawing on her own experiences.

This event is free and pizza/beer/wine/soft drinks will be provided.

Space is limited, so please RSVP if you plan to attend.
