  • GPS Coordinates: 1.402174, 103.970695
  • G oogle Maps link: http://goo.gl/A8ejjJ

Transportation:

Typically, it takes approximately 30-40 minutes by taxi from the CBD, Woodlands, or Jurong, or anywhere from 1 to 2 hours when using public transportation. Please make certain that you head to the right ferry terminal, which is Changi Village Ferry Terminal (postcode 499172), and not Changi Ferry Terminal (postcode 499675).

What to Bring:

  • Please bring your own equipment and tools, including garbage bags, gardening gloves, sturdy shoes, water, mosquito repellent, and sunscreen.
  • If you have trash pickers or BBQ tongs, consider bringing them as well.
  • Please make sure to have a minimum of 20 SGD in cash per person on the event day to cover the cost of the boat ride (8 SGD for the round trip per person) and potential local taxi expenses (6 SGD for the round trip per person).

Make sure you read this carefully:

  • It is highly recommended to wear long-sleeved tops and pants/trousers, along with appropriate footwear, to prevent mosquito and ant bites. Avoid flip-flops or sandals.
  • Children are welcome but must be supervised by adults.
  • Punctuality is crucial; it can be challenging to locate the group once the activity begins.
  • The boat at Changi Village Ferry Terminal departs once 12 people are ready to go, so aim to arrive at the ferry terminal at least 1 hour before the event's start time to ensure timely arrival at the meeting point.
  • The one-way boat ride from Changi Point Ferry Terminal to Pulau Ubin Jetty costs 4 SGD per person.
  • Depending on the distance of the cleanup site from the meeting point, we may consider using local taxis. The one-way taxi ride between the cleanup site and the meeting point is 3 SGD per person. Therefore, please ensure that you have enough coins with you on the day of the event as only cash is accepted.

Frequently asked questions

What items should I bring?

Participants are responsible for bringing their own equipment, including sturdy gardening gloves, tongs, around 45-liter garbage bags, and sufficient water to prevent dehydration. Consider packing mosquito repellent as well to ward off the occasional insect nuisance.

Is it okay to wear shorts and flip-flops?

Due to the prevalent forested cleanup sites teeming with insects like ants and mosquitoes, we strongly recommend avoiding shorts or flip-flops. To ensure an enjoyable experience, it's advisable to wear long pants and appropriate footwear for your own comfort and protection.

How long does it take to get to Pulau Ubin?

By car, it's a quick 30-40 mins from the city to Changi Village jetty. For public transport, plan 1-2 hrs. Then, just a 5-min boat ride to Pulau Ubin!

Is there a Google Maps link I can use?

Absolutely! There is is: https://goo.gl/maps/k7P7zy78YC6LTc3x6

What's the recommended departure time to ensure I arrive on time?

Depending on your mode of transport, reaching Changi Point Ferry Terminal by 8:30 AM is a good plan. Be sure to check Google Maps for any unexpected traffic surprises!

I've heard there are two ferry terminals in Changi. Which one should I choose?

You're right; it can be confusing. Make sure to select the RIGHT one: Changi Village Ferry Terminal (postcode 499172), not Changi Ferry Terminal (postcode 499675). They're about 10 mins by car or 30 mins by public transport apart, so don't make the mistake!

What's the cost of the boat ride?

In 2024 it's 4 SGD per person for a one-way ride. Please note that boat owners only accept cash, so be sure to have enough on hand.

Can children join in?

Absolutely! We encourage children to join us as cleanups are a great educational experience for them.

What type of cleanup is it?

Since Pulau Ubin is predominantly forested, our cleanup efforts primarily involve traversing the island's interior along its various roads. Garbage is typically found either alongside the roads or within the forested areas, so it's essential to wear long sleeves and sturdy footwear for this activity

Do we use local taxis to get to the cleanup site from the meeting point?

Sometimes, depending on the cleanup site's location, we may use local taxis, and as of 2024, the cost is 2 SGD per person for a single ride. It's a good idea to carry some coins with you on the event day. If the site is close, walking is a convenient option too.

Organized by

After visiting Pulau Ubin a couple of times for cycling, it didn't take long to realize just how much rubbish is scattered everywhere, even in places you wouldn't expect, like in the tropical rain forest. It is disappointingly rampant. The main culprits include plastic bottles and aluminium cans, but also lots of heavy items which belonged to the houses that were once built on Pulau Ubin. To my dismay, not much has changed in this regard since my initial visit in 2009.

Because of this, I decided to set up a volunteer base for organized rubbish collection events. These events would typically last for 1 to 2 hours and takes place on the weekend every 4-6 weeks. Volunteers are asked to bring along their own garbage bags and gloves and other rubbish collecting utensils (e.g. barbecue tongs). It is also strongly encouraged to use good mosquito repellent, wear long-sleeved top and pants/trousers to avoid getting bitten by the mosquitoes there! Refreshing coconuts, beer and seafood awaits after the afternoon’s hard work too! So we look forward to seeing you there! About myself: My name is Samuel Gmehlin, I am originally from Switzerland.
