Introductory Masterclass - delivered by current Nature editors.

This ½-day session will cater towards researchers who are beginning to publish their work in scientific journals. We will focus on the writing process and what to include in each section of the paper. Participants will develop strategies to structure and edit manuscripts, improve figure presentation and how to put this into practice.

09:15 What Makes a Great Paper? 30 mins, What top-tier journal editors look for in manuscripts, with recent examples from Nature publications

09:45 Practical Exercise 1: You’re the editor! 15 mins

10:00 Figure Presentation, 30 mins. An interactive module on designing clear and informative figures and graphs

10:30 Elements of Writing Style, 20 mins. The golden rules of writing and structuring the text in your paper

10:50 Practical Exercise 2: Brevity, 10 mins

11:00 Break

11:15 Titles and Abstracts, 40 mins. A guide to structuring each part of the paper to facilitate clear writing of the Title and Abstract

11:55 Practical Exercise 3: Writing a Title, 15 mins

12:10 Authorship and Authors’ Responsibilities ,20 mins. The contributing criteria for authorship and the responsibilities of an author
