About this event
The workshop day will start at The Big Shed at Tombrek where hot drinks will be available on your arrival followed by an introductory presentation given on the type of subjects we may photograph on the day.
Although this is a nature photography workshop we cannot guarantee you will photograph birds and mammals, such as rutting red deerstags etc - but we will of course take advantage of any encounters we may have.
The emphasis will be on encouraging participants in seeing potential in photographing the wide range of other subjects in nature, such as fungi, trees in autumnal colours and landscapes. Working with more reliable subjects allows us time to take a unhurried, considered approach in order to produce images that are fresh and creative.
Although help with the basics of technical matters will be available the small group size, a maximum of six, ensures ample one-to-one time for each group member. This allows for a more bespoke experience, by identifying specific areas where help may be needed. For more experienced photographers, in-depth help can be given on specialised subjects such as, long-lens technique, flash, extreme macro etc.
This one day nature photography workshop is designed to show participants how to get the most from whatever photographic equipment they happen to own.
There is no need for masses of equipment so only bring what you feel comfortable carrying for the whole day. We won’t be covering great distances, perhaps only a few hundred metres, and the pace will be deliberately slow to ensure we have time to pause, observe and assess the potential of any interesting subject we may find. Apart from a DSLR, Mirror-less or Bridge Camera, the following items (if you already own them) are recommended to bring:
1) Tripod with a means of triggering the camera via a remote release.
2) A 24-70mm (for full-frame) or 18-55mm (crop-sensor) zoom lens.
3) A long lens in the 70-300mm range. Longer lenses are less important but would be useful for any wildlife encounter.
4) Lens hoods for all lenses.
5) Any close-up equipment, such macro lenses, extension tubes or close-up filters.
6) Spare battery and memory cards.
7) A plastic bin liner for kneeling on damp ground.
Laurie will have spare tripods, reflectors, filters etc available that may be loaned on the day should the need arise.
Please also bring a packed lunch. Hot drinks will be available at lunchtime and at close of day.
Do please dress according to the weather forecast and come prepared with waterproof footwear as we may occasionally encounter muddy conditions.
If the 'worst' happens and rainy weather is forecast nearer the time, this wouldn't necessarily result in the cancellation of the workshop. Regard it as an opportunity to learn how it is perfectly possible to shoot brilliant pictures in these conditions! The exception would be prolonged spells of heavy rain and high winds, in which case a notice of cancellation would be given by Wednesday 1st October.
