Event description
Linnean Learning wants to see a world where curiosity in the natural world is shared by everyone

About this Event

We are very excited to announce that August is Linnean Learning's Nature Month!

As part of this, we have four week-long projects for 12-16 year olds to engage throughout August. Each week we will introduce a new role model who engages with nature in a different way - it could be through art, science, dance, literature or something else.

Our aim is to showcase the diversity of people already involved in the study of nature and natural history, as well illustrate the diversity of opportunity available for anyone studying the natural world, covering art, history and literature as well as the sciences.

Each week, the role model will tell our participants a little about themselves and then outline a creative project for them to complete by the end of the week. Participants will also have opportunities to engage with us online, in a safe space frequently used by schools and educators.

You can participate in all four weeks if you'd like, but spaces are limited so please only book onto week's that you can commit to.

Each participant will receive a physical certificate upon completion of the programme if they have engaged with the content. This can be sent to schools or directly to the participants.

Brief Schedule (the role models will be announced a few days before each week begins):

03-07 August | Week 1: Under the Ground

10-14 August | Week 2: In the Water

17-21 August | Week 3: On the Land

24-28 August | Week 4: Out in Space

How can we participate?

We will be using FlipGrid to share our content and engage with our Young Linneans.

FlipGrid is an easy to use video-based platform used primarily by teachers to encourage their pupils to create exciting and rich videos in response to challenges or activities set by them. The Linnean Learning staff have complete oversight over all shared content and users cannot interact privately with each-another.

If you want to play around, visit this example and give it a go!

What do we need?

You will need access to the internet on any device. FlipGrid is easily accessed on a web-browser using a computer, or you can download the FlipGrid app on a phone or tablet. No content is being streamed live so you should manage on slow internet speeds. FlipGrid requires a Microsoft or Google account, both of which are free to set up.

We will also be posting each week's activities on our social media, so you can follow along @LinneanLearning if you can't use FlipGrid.

Each week's activity will be designed to use only items you can find around your home. If we think you might need to find something special, we will send you an email way in advance.

Where do we register?

Finally, registration should be easy. All you need to do is click the register button at the top of this page and select the dates you'd like to participate in.

We have limited the capacity of each week to 40 participants so we will be able to engage well with everyone in the group. That means it is first come first served. Please join the waiting list if there are no spaces remaining and we will do our best to fit you in or set you up for another opportunity.
