The sensory experience of the autistic is receiving more attention and how it impacts all aspects of one’s ability to engage in the environment. In order for us to be able to help navigate our child /young person through some of the sensory challenges they may encounter we must first explore what is meant by the sensory system.

The workshop will endeavour to explore our own sensory systems -what it means to have five senses and two other sensory systems that we use on a consistent basis. This will enable us to explore some of the more common sensory challenges that autistic people may experience.

With an understanding of the sensory system we can begin to see the full range of sensory types that our children and young people may switch between so that we can begin to implement sensory strategies that help our child regulate their own sensory system. We will also look at a range of practical strategies how to encourage our children and young people to learn how to self regulate their own sensory systems with the aid of their parents, teachers and support staff.

The Empower project is a Big Lottery funded initiative through the Reaching Out Supporting Families Programme which support Families across Mid Ulster and Antrim & Newtownabbey Council areas. The focus of the project is to support children under 12 with Autism, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia, their parents and the wider family circle to enhance confidence and learn together to develop skills to support their children.
