This session draws on the anthropological concept of liminality (a threshold; a space between two identities or states) to explore how service users (and staff) often find themselves in-between roles, identities, or systems e.g., post-hospital, newly bereaved, moving house, ageing.
Organisations can play a crucial role in holding, accompanying, and naming these transitions.
Lori Hall is a Health & Social Care lecturer, PhD researcher, and experienced practitioner with over 20 years in the health and social care industry from shop floor to management, clinical and educational. Her research brings together critical disability studies, anthropology, and participatory methods to explore friendship, belonging, and epistemic justice. Drawing on both academic theory and lived experience as a parent of a disabled child, her work centres the voices of those often left unheard, challenging structural liminality and reimagining inclusive public health research through creativity, collaboration, and care.
