This presentation, while framed within the context of the MRH programme, will focus on the broader and recurring challenges encountered during signalling development — challenges that are emblematic of major enhancement projects across the rail network.A key theme is the role of the signalling engineer stepping beyond the traditional boundaries of design to act as systems engineer, integrator and bridge between railway operations and the myriad of disciplines in a modern engineering project. This shift has enabled more effective engagement with stakeholders, ensuring that operational requirements are fully understood and integrated, and that the risks inherent in complex developments are proactively managed. The session will explore four core challenge areas:

  • Stakeholder Complexity: Navigating the diverse and often competing priorities of railway operational stakeholders.
  • Risk Assessment Interdependencies: Understanding not just the individual risk activities required, but how they overlap, interact, and influence each other.
  • Drivability Considerations: Ensuring the development supports safe, efficient, and intuitive train operations from a driver’s perspective.
  • Delivery and Implementation Impact: Designing solutions with a clear view of how they will be delivered, and anticipating the operational impact at each stage of deployment.

Through this lens, the presentation aims to share insights, lessons learned, and innovative approaches that can inform future signalling developments across the network. Presented by Mott MacDonald.
